PI Kids Donation to First Book in Honor of Star Wars Reads
Phoenix International Publications, Inc. (PI Kids), a leading global publisher of children’s books and proponent of youth literacy, celebrated Star Wars Reads month in October with a donation of more than 1,000 copies of Star Wars titles to First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise founded to address educational inequality.
Titles donated were from the popular Look and Find® line, which encourages children and families to find hidden objects across multiple busy scenes. Look and Find® books help children develop searching and matching skills, while keeping them engaged as they explore the exciting Star Wars universe.
“We’re proud and thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with the Star Wars Reads and First Book teams for this special donation. Our company has always been committed to engaging, educating, and entertaining young readers. It made us very happy to be able to share our love for Star Wars and to give back at the same time,” shared Lynn Sikora, Director of Marketing at PI Kids.
“The Book Bank exists because publishers like PI Kids believe that all kids, no matter their circumstances, should have access to quality books,” said Carey Palmquist, senior vice president of ecommerce at First Book. “We are enormously grateful to PI Kids for their commitment and their donation.”
The books will be distributed through the First Book National Book Bank (www.fbbookbank.org). Originally launched in 1998, Book Bank was the first, and remains the only, centralized distribution system for large-scale donations of children’s books from publishers to schools and programs serving kids in need. Today, the First Book National Book Bank distributes more than 13 million books annually.
This donation concludes PI Kids’ celebration of this month-long literacy event.

Prescription for Parents: Read to Your Kids
Reading regularly with young children stimulates optimal patterns of brain development and strengthens parent-child relationships at a critical time in child development, which, in turn, builds language, literacy, and social-emotional skills that last a lifetime.
That’s the finding of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), whose June 2014 policy statement recommends that pediatric providers promote early literacy development for children beginning in infancy and continuing at least until kindergarten.
Pediatric providers are directed to advise parents that reading aloud with young children can enhance parent-child relationships and prepare young minds to learn language and early literacy skills. They’re also encouraged to guide parents toward developmentally appropriate shared-reading activities that are enjoyable for children and parents and offer language-rich exposure to books, pictures, and the written word.
p i kids books are designed with parent-child reading experiences in mind. For pre-readers, our sound story books provide a great opportunity for children to follow along while the parent reads and then press the sound buttons when they appear in the story. Our First Look and Find® books feature parent-child activities that focus on counting, matching, rhyming, alphabet, shape identification, spatial relations, and more. And our keepsake treasuries are just right for reading together at naptime, bedtime, or anytime!
